You must do the Blue Lagoon at night! 🇮🇸

When my friend Ed told me that our Blue Lagoon booking was at 6pm in the evening, I wasn’t sure that he had booked the best time. I figured it was going to be dark, nothing to see when there are beautiful landscapes every which way you look in Iceland. However I could not have been more impressed with this time slot. Let me tell you why!

Firstly, it’s not great forgetting your swimming trucks at your apartment, however you can grab a pair of ‘Rent Only shorts at the spa and they were just as comfortable as my own. Using your swanky wireless wristband, you enter into the changing rooms lined with showers in which you are to use prior to entering the main pool. The showers are lovely and warm and help prepare your body for the high temperatures. You walk outside onto the decking and the freezing air hits your body. You feel super cold, but you see the steam rising from the waters edge, beautifully lit with a mixture of ambient lighting and warm L.E.Ds and as you walk down the ramp into the hot waters, you begin to feel your body relax.

I decided to have slow meander around the pool and found the bar!!!! A bar, in the middle of this pool! Did I mention we got a free drink with our entry?? This was my first point of call and a fantastic moment for us to take in how well our trip had gone in our first couple days. The clear night sky, toasty waters and a beer to top it off. What could be better than this?…

Looking up at the stars whilst chatting and drinking with friends was a delightful moment for sure, but suddenly I found myself focusing my eyes on some rather unusual looking clouds. They were thin and very long. They looked like they spanned miles, but I couldn’t quite make them out. It is only when they increased in numbers and started changing colours that I realised I was witnessing something truly special. The auroras!! I had just put my camera back in my locker and made my way back the guys, when the Northern Lights started the dance across the sky. For the next couple of hours we would have a symphony, an orchestra of greens and purples waltzing in the sky!!

I couldn’t believe it! One of the hardest natural occurrences to find in Iceland, is happening directly above the Blue Lagoon! It was awe inspiring. A moment I will never forget and as a result, 6pm is a time slot I cannot recommend enough!

  • Accommodation 🏨 Booking your stay in Iceland? I would recommend staying in Reykjavik perfect hub to base your trip from!

  • Travel 🚇 In Iceland a car is a must for getting around. Rent a car as most places are isolated with no public transport! I’d also advise a Crossover as the roads can get really bumpy.

  • Must Visit 🗼 Blue Lagoon.

  • eSim 📲 Using data abroad is easy and essential especially with maps. My choice is Airalo. It’s my go-to when travelling to multiple continents and can be installed before you even leave your house.

  • Travel Insurance 🌐 SafetyWing provide the best price & cover for travel across multiple countries. Recommended for all travellers by travellers!
